Red Bull KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey took his first win of the season aboard the KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition motorcycle in the 450 SX class at the fifth round of the Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship Series, held at Angel Stadium.

Dungey had a storybook day after going into the round with the red plate as the championship leader. He was in top form throughout Saturday scoring the fastest qualifying time for first gate pick for his heat.

When the gate dropped for his heat race, Dungey had a great jump off the line and immediately started to advance to the front of the pack. Halfway into the race he took the lead and went on to secure a comfortable victory for his place in the main event.

Dungey leaped off the line in second at the start of the main and advanced to the lead just before the sand section in the opening lap. He then settled well, maintained his pace and delivered a faultless race right up to the flag.

“It feels so great to get this win,” stated Dungey. “The whole team and myself have been working really hard to get everything dialed in and I think our progress shows based on my results over the past few weeks. I am very thankful to them for their hard work to help get me up here each weekend.”

To top the weekend off, Dungey’s mechanic, Carlos Rivera, also won the MMI Top Technician award at the Anaheim III Supercross. Rivera was given the $1,000 check for his work to maintain Dungey’s bike this week. Rivera is a graduate of the MMI program.

Dungey will now head to the next event with an 11-point lead in the championship series and again starts in San Diego with the red number plate.

KTM rider Jessy Nelson second in 250-classl

Anaheim 3 was a good night out for KTM rider Jessy Nelson who finished second to Cooper Webb in the 250-class West Coast Series while Red Bull KTM Factory rider Justin Hill fought back to a hard earned eighth place.

Hill has been fighting a very bad cold over past weeks battled through his afternoon qualifying session with a top three lap time. He earned a top five start in the second heat and quickly moved up to third. He then rode a solid race to easily advance to the main event.

A malfunction of the gate drop caused AMS officials to red flag the main event after five laps, where Hill had been riding in fifth place. He had a good jump out of the gate for the second drop but crashed with another rider in the second corner. He scrambled back into the race at the back of the pack and immediately began to pick off as many riders as possible in the remaining laps. He was eleventh at the half way mark and moved up to eighth with just a few laps remaining.

“I’m bummed about the restart because I had a decent start in the first gate drop,” stated Hill. “But it is just part of racing, and unfortunately, I suffered that crash in the beginning. I’m glad I was able to salvage the positions I did and get into the top ten.”
