All the highlights from Washougal!
In 450 Class Moto 1, Marvin Musquin had his work cut out for him as he began the race just inside the top ten. His teammate, Dean Wilson, started just ahead in the 7th place position on lap one. Musquin quickly made passes to advance toward the front where he powered his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION into 4th place by lap three, with Wilson maintaining a steady position in 7th.
Musquin continued to gain ground on the 3rd place rider of Eli Tomac as he eventually put himself within striking distance of Tomac. However, Musquin went down in a bold attempt to make the pass on Tomac, where he landed into a breaking bump and launched off his bike.
Musquin quickly remounted to maintain his 4th place position as he continued to charge ahead. Musquin finished 3rd place in Moto 1 after gaining a position due to an unfortunate crash by Christophe Pourcel late in the race.
Wilson battled with James Stewart in the final laps, where he ultimately bested Stewart to finish 8th in Moto 1.
In Moto 2, Musquin shot off the line to capture the holeshot with his teammate Wilson close in tow. Musquin led the way on the opening lap until Roczen, and eventually Tomac, moved past to engage in a battle for the lead, while Musquin settled into 3rd place.
Musquin put forth a solid performance to earn 3rd place in Moto 2, thus securing 3rd overall for the day.
“I honestly expected better from myself in the second moto after a decent first moto and good lap times,” Musquin said. “The track was really tough – it was dry and kind of sketchy so I was trying to be safe and finish the moto but I should have had better lines. No excuses, though, 3rd overall is good but I know I can do better.”
Wilson maintained a top-five position for nearly the first half of the race before dropping back a few positions, where he ultimately finished 10th in Moto 2. In only his second race back this summer, Wilson claimed 9th overall with 8-10 moto scores.
Troy Lee Designs Red Bull KTM’s Jessy Nelson returns to grab Moto 2 podium
Troy Lee Designs Red Bull KTM saw the return of both Jessy Nelson and Justin Hill at the picturesque Washougal Motocross Park outside Portland, with Nelson racing to a Moto 2 podium finish and Hill grabbing fifth overall. Teammate Mitchell Oldenburg finished 10th overall to put all three riders in top 10.
In his first race back since Glen Helen in May, Hill was happy to be back charging in front of his home crowd. Growing up about two and a half hours from Washougal, Hill has always enjoyed racing the circuit and it showed with two finishes inside the top 10. His 8-4 moto result was the top of the team for fifth overall.
Also back for his first race was Nelson, who hadn’t been on track since Thunder Valley at the beginning of June. While he had only been on the bike less than a week, Nelson learned from his first moto result of 16th to come out swinging in Moto 2. He got a great start on his KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION and stayed with the front pack to score his second moto podium of the season. Nelson’s 16-3 moto result scored him 9th overall.
Rounding out the top 10 finishes was the Oldenburg, who has had to endure the grueling schedule as the series hit its 10th round. He kept a steady speed for both motos to enjoy his third top-10 finish of the season.
“I’m really looking forward to a few weekends off,” said Oldenburg. “It’s been fun representing the team with many of my teammates out but with outdoors being so intense, I’m ready to enjoy a some down time. I’ll be back to end the season on a high note.”
After six weeks of straight racing, the team gets a two-weekend break before rejoining the series in New Berlin, New York at Unadilla MX on August 13.
