Red Bull KTM Factory rider Ryan Dungey took the overall win at the tenth round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series at Unadilla Raceway in New Berlin, New York on Saturday to close the gap to teammate Ken Roczen to just seven points with two rounds still to go. Both Dungey and Roczen ride the KTM 450 SX-F machine
The championship has developed into a battle of the titans as the two Red Bull-sponsored KTM factory riders take it down to the wire while in the 250-class, teammate Marvin Musquin was again on the podium in third overall ahead of Christoph Pourcel and Jeremy Martin and continues to encroach on third placed Cooper Webb in the points. Musquin currently trails him by 19-points with two rounds in hand.
Both Dungey and Roczen launched off the line to top five starts in the first moto. Dungey quickly moved into the lead and tried to put a gap on the rest of the field while Roczen was tucked in behind him in second. Roczen pressured Dungey for the first half of the race before Dungey started to pull away and went on to take the win by an impressive eight seconds margin.
“Roczen definitely kept me honest in the first moto,” stated Dungey. “I know there are two motos so I still have a lot of work to do in the second half, but the track is good and so is my bike today so I am looking forward to moto two.”
Dungey got another great start and was in third place at the end of the first lap in his second moto. He gradually whittled away the deficit to second placed Eli Tomac and finally made his pass stick in the thirteenth lap. Once in second position, he maintained his pace and went on to secure the overall for the day with his 1-2 result.
Ryan Dungey: “The ultimate goal is the championship and I made some points up today but I have to take each race one at a time. There are still points to be made up and two races left to do it.”
Roczen also picked up a good start in the second moto. He was in fourth place at the end of the fourth lap and hung onto that position throughout the moto. His 2-4 moto scores scored him fourth overall for the day. He hangs onto the championship points lead and has set the scene for an end of season showdown for the title with teammate Dungey.
Podium third for Musquin in 250s
French rider Marvin Musquin, fresh off of an overall win in the previous round, came to Unadilla Raceway with plenty of confidence. He also turned the fastest lap time while chasing down the lead ride of Christophe Pourcel. Musquin started the opening moto inside the top five and moved into second place during the first five laps. He then narrowed the gap to the lead rider from five- to less than a second when the white flag came out. Musquin tried all possible lines to try and make up time on Pourcel on the final lap but came up just shy of challenging for the position to finish second.
Musquin picked up another top five start in his second moto and battled for fourth place in the first half of the race. He eventually settled into fifth and carried that position to the final flag. His 2-5 moto results earned him third overall for the day.
Marvin Musquin: “Overall, I am happy to be on the podium today. I wish I could have had a better result the second moto but I know what I need to work on so I can come back stronger at the next round.”
With two rounds remaining Musquin now sits fourth in the overall point standings. he rides the KTM 250 SX-F factory bike.
