If you live in the U.S. and don’t have plans yet for Thanksgiving weekend, you might want to pencil in the Red Bull Day in the Dirt Motocross Grand Prix 2012. It’s going to be happening at Glen Helen Raceway just north of San Bernardino, California. It’s hard to believe it, but this year’s event will be the 15th annual, and it’s going to be as crazy a ride as ever. Since Red Bull’s hosting the event, we can definitely expect some wild antics and mayhem.
If you’re not familiar with Day in the Dirt or are only vaguely familiar with it, it’s a motocross event that includes three days of races, parties, and social gatherings. It was started by stuntmen, Kenny Alexander and Jimmy Roberts, in 1998, in memory of Steve McQueen, the motorcycle enthusiast and famed anti-hero of popular films in the 1960s and 70s. All of the money raised from the Day in the Dirt practice sessions goes to a memorial fund in Steve McQueen’s name for the Boys Republic, a school and treatment facility for youth who have had run-ins with the criminal justice system.
Day in the Dirt racers and audience members usually include stuntmen and women, pro racers, intermediate racers, inexperienced racers, firefighters, police officers, vintage bike owners, and motocross enthusiasts. Anyone who likes participating in and watching dirt bike and motorcycle races in general will feel completely at home at this event.
The courses that are going to be used at this year’s event were created by motorcycle helmet designer, Troy Lee, and pro racers, Ricky Johnson, Gary Jones, and Kenny Alexander. Additionally, Troy Lee will be presenting the event, and Kenny Alexander will be running it. According to Dirt Rider, the courses will probably include hills, asphalt, and various other materials that will make the races more challenging and exciting.
This will be the first time the event is being held at Glen Helen Raceway, where big events like the Off Road Winter Series and AMA Nationals have also been held. The raceway is surrounded by the beautiful mountains north of San Bernardino, and it’s definitely a stunning and spectacular location.
So, consider checking out the 2012 Red Bull Day in the Dirt! It’s one of the many exciting motocross events that will be happening over the next two months. What events are you excited about? Let us know!
