SIX SIX ONE all mountain Helmet, Knee pads and Shoes review

We have been using the new SIX SIX ONE EVO AM helmet, the SPD FILTER Shoe and the COMP AM knee pads since the spring and all have held up brilliantly, passing the derestricted destruction use and abuse tests without a glitch.

SIX SIX ONE EVO AM HELMET

Starting with the Helmet, it comes in 2 versions, one with MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) and the standard version which we have. The fit is great, with good padding, much more solid strap attachments than a XC helmet, a rotating size adjuster to make it fit snugly and a really good level of protection for an open face helmet. Overall once it’s on you don’t think about it, which is as it should be. It looks as good or better than any open faced mountain bike helmet (I still don’t think anybody ever looks that cool in a mountain bike helmet, but it’s better to wear one than break your head!) and the additional protection over a XC helmet gives you a good level of confidence to charge the downhills. Due to the additional protection it is a little warmer than a road or XC helmet but in less toasty climates this is actually a nice added benefit!

Here is the official info on it:
As the name implies, the Six Six One Evo AM Helmet is a next generation trail helmet with all the features you need. The modern-looking shell is built from Contigo foam, which was chosen for its energy-absorbing properties. Specifically, it’s claimed to absorb as much as 30% more energy from an impact than the EPS foams used in almost every other certified bicycle helmet. While that may be the most important detail, more subtle refinements, such as the two-position adjustable visor and the user-friendly Boa retention system mean that you don’t have to forgo modern features in the pursuit of protection. And it’s topped off with a Fidlock magnetic buckle that takes pretty much all the effort out of strapping on your lid, despite the fact that it’s completely secure.

SIX SIX ONE COMP AM KNEE PADS

In the past I just stuck my Troy Lee Knee pads in my rucksack until I reached some big downhills and then put them on.  With the SIX SIX ONE COMP AM Knee pads, they are minimal enough that you can put them on when you leave the house and not worry about them. You can pedal in them no problem at all. They don’t slip down, they get nice and soft once they warm up a bit and they offer great protection for your whole ride, not just on the downhills. We like them. Plus they look cool.

SIX SIX ONE FILTER SPD SHOE

The trails around Salzburg are ridiculously steep and usually quite slippery especially in the woods which are full of off-camber roots and massive rocks and you end up putting your foot down fairly often. As such I always hated clip-ins with a passion. The trouble is that to reach most of the trails you need to pedal up, often over 1000m of ascent in which case flat DH pedals are not ideal either. Still, I always chose the flats over the Clip ins until I got these Filter SPD Shoes. Coupled with the Crank Brothers Mallet MTB Pedals with the pins screwed all the way out, you forget you have clip ins. Your feet feel fully planted on the pedals in a way that feels very similar to my flats, except that pedaling in them is also great. the sole is very stiff and once you cut out the middle there is a slider to attach your cleats so you can really customize where your foot sits on the pedals. For park and uplift days, I reckon I’m still taking flats, but for enduro and everyday rides, I’m fully sold on these FILTER SPD shoes.

Sizing runs a bit big I found, so you might want to try them on before you buy them, or take them half a size smaller than usual.
