2016 Husqvarna FS 450 – NEW GENERATION SUPERMOTO

Husqvarna Motorcycles introduces the newly released 2016 model FS 450. On dealer floors by the end of September, the new supermoto is completely revamped.

The FS 450 is a machine in the real Swedish tradition and the distinctive and futuristic bodywork highlights a massive leap forward in performance.

The company’s research and development engineers have designed a new chromium molybdenum steel frame that redefines the bike’s structural aspect and is in complete harmony with the new engine stays. The result is improved handling precision, while at the same time delivering an excellent feeling to the rider. This new design, high quality materials and high-tech production processes by WP Performance Systems result in a weight saving of 380 g when compared to the 2015 FS 450.

At the same time the new subframe is made of a composite material that is 30% carbon fibre and features a three-piece construction, which is 1 kg lighter than its equivalent in the previous model. Weighing only 1.4 kg, it is shorter and more compact for greatly improved ergonomics.

The new cast aluminium swingarm has been redesigned for optimal stiffness to improve traction and feeling. It is also 250 g lighter while maintaining its structural integrity and reliability.

The 63 horsepower single-overhead-cam 450 cc engine, the most powerful Husqvarna 450 cc supermoto engine yet developed, is smaller, lighter and reconfigured for optimal mass-centralisation within the new chromoly steel frame. In short, it represents the perfect complement to the new generation chassis.

The new engine is now 23 mm shorter, 23 mm narrower and 9 mm lower. Every internal component has been revised and repositioned to reduce the weight by 1.8 kg for an overall weight of 27.8 kg.

The SOHC cylinder head has also been redesigned to be 350 g lighter and features optimised combustion chamber and ports. The crankshaft has 10% more inertia and has been repositioned 9 mm backwards and 7 mm higher. The new crankcases are now significantly more compact and lighter.

The FS 450 has a lighter and more compact 5-speed gearbox that is 8 mm narrower and 350 g lighter than the previous generation. The APTC (Adler Power Torque Clutch) slipper clutch prevents rear wheel instability and hopping when braking hard going into the apex of a turn. This allows for maximum control and perfect Supermoto-style drifting. The Magura hydraulic system guarantees perfect clutch modulation.

Meanwhile the new Keihin Engine Management System (EMS) is smaller, lighter and faster at processing data for more efficient engine management. The FS 450 also features a standard handlebar map switch, which also activates launch control, a function that limits the amount of power to the rear wheel for approximately two seconds. This results in improved traction and the prevention of loss of control under hard acceleration.

The repositioning of the injector on the new 44 mm throttle body optimises flow into the combustion chamber. The overall weight is reduced by 100 g through eliminating the throttle linkage and directly mounting the throttle cables. At the same time, the throttle body provides more immediate throttle response and feeling.

The exhaust system is redesigned to improve mass-centralisation and reduce noise. The resonance chamber on the 450 cc SOHC engine is also integrated into the header pipe to resemble a 2-stroke expansion chamber. The silencer is also shorter than on the MY15 FS 450.

The FS 450 Supermoto is equipped with superior Brembo brakes, featuring a 4-piston radially mounted caliper and pump combined with a 310 mm front disk. A single piston caliper and a 220mm disc are fitted to the rear.

Lightweight and strong black 16.5”/17” Alpina spoke wheels are fitted both front and rear together with Bridgestone 125/80 R420 and 165/65 R420 slick tyres for maximum grip, traction and agility.

Thanks to the accurate and consistent damping characteristics of the closed cartridge technology and 280 mm suspension travel, the quality WP Suspension comprising a 48mm closed cartridge front fork and CNC machined black triple clamps, ensure exceptional handling and feel of the front end. The precisely engineered flex is designed to deliver comprehensive feedback and evenly distribute the clamping force on the fork leg to maximise the contact area for optimal sensitivity and minimum friction.

The high performance WP rear shock has been specifically designed for Supermoto and features 266 mm or rear travel. It features fully adjustable rebound and high/low speed compression, guaranteeing excellent stability and world-class damping.

The airbox is also redesigned and comes with a new inlet duct that reduces deformation, ensuring maximum airflow and filter protection. The air filter can be accessed without tools by simply removing the left side panel.

I work at a dealership here in the states that owns the local go-kart track. I need this thing in my life! Last I remembering hearing though they weren’t going to bring it into the US. Any idea if that’s still the case?

I don’t see it on the USA website so maybe not. This would be amazing on a go-kart track!

Hey guys, I love your site as always!

Quick question: Since you are the experts when it comes to almost anything on 2 wheels, especially in my world of sumo, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new Husqvarna 701.
In the US we only really have, outside of Japan, the 500EXC, FE501S, 690EnduRo (if make this model year) and the new 701 fully street designed. The last one to possibly hit US streets late spring 2106.

You have designed some of the best looking and functioning bikes on the planet, including the EXCs from KTM and the redesigned and gorgeous Husqvarnas of late. I can’t decide between a 501S or 701 but your passion for the “Swedish” bike company has me leaning towards the blue – yellow instead of orange.

So I’d love your expert opinions on what you would do with the 701, since it’s got a lot of the street “conversion” done already. I assume a damper is standard and a triple clamp is either needed or also part of the stock bike? If you had task of getting the bike in top notch shape for sumo riding, and mostly street riding, what would you do? Also paint and graphics would you implement for a Derestricted-ised 701? I’d love to hear your ideas.

    Thanks!
    J
